Cables & Flexes

Watteredge manufactures several product lines dedicated to flexible high current power conduction or specialty thermal transfer conduction applications. These products provide a flexible power conductor for:

  • Dynamic Applications
  • Thermal Expansion Joints
  • Vibration Isolation
  • Misalignment Compensation
  • Flexible Field Routing of Conductors

The products range from a simple air cooled braid to as complex as a Coax-water cooled cable assembly. The table below provides a general comparison guide for these products and a typical application guide.

Flex Type  DOF Flexibility  Volume Efficiency Ampacity (cont. duty) Max typ. Length Types Applications
Laminate  2 5 95 50 to 10000 4ft Press Welded, Welded, Riveted  Switches, Resistance Welding, Thermal Expansion Joints, Transformer Bushings, Battery Jumpers, Iso-Phase
Braid 2+ 4 80 50 to 3200  8ft  Presswelded, Compression Iso-Phase, Thermal Expansion Joints, Transformer Bushings, Vibration Isolation, Utilities
Insulated Cable 3 3 70 50 to 1600 100ft  Various insulations, Litz wire  Battery Cables, Utilities, Furnaces
Air Cooled Cable 3 4 75 50 to 4500 100ft  Single conductor, Dual conductor, Alternate polarity  Furnaces, Resistance Welding
Water Cooled Cable  3 2 500 1000 to 80000 50ft  Single conductor, Dual conductor, Alternate polarity, Coax, HF Litz wire  Furnaces, Resistance Welding, Induction Furnace, Switches, Research

DOF: How many degrees of freedom in motion does the flex have? 2 = Part will flex in x and y plane, 2+ = Part will flex in x and plane with limited flex in z, 3 = Part will flex in all 3 planes.

Flexibility: Relative comparison of flexibility between each flex type in their range of motion. 5 is most flexible, 1 is least flexible.

Volume Efficiency: Relative measure of the volumetric space the flex occupies versus its current capacity. Solid copper bar would be 100%.

Ampacity Range: Typical continuous duty ampacity range of a single conductor flex type. Larger ampacities are possible with paralleling conductors.

Max Length: Max recommended flex length. Larger lengths are possible but not typical.

Types: Available construction/material types.

Applications: Typical application type.
